Our role within these projects typically includes the delivery of all enabling and civil engineering works required to facilitate the installation of modular public toilet buildings. This includes the construction of reinforced concrete bases or piled foundations where ground conditions require, together with the installation and connection of all necessary utility services including water supply, drainage, electrical infrastructure and data connections. All works are undertaken in accordance with relevant statutory requirements and industry best practice, ensuring installations integrate seamlessly into the surrounding environment while providing long-term durability and accessibility.
A key element of many of these installations is the provision of accessible facilities that meet the requirements of Approved Document M – Access to and Use of Buildings (Building Regulations 2010) and the Changing Places Toilet standard in accordance with BS 8300-2:2018. These specialist facilities are designed to support individuals with complex disabilities who require additional space and specialist equipment such as ceiling hoists, height-adjustable changing benches and enhanced circulation areas.
Where projects are delivered within Scotland, facilities are also designed and constructed in accordance with the Scottish Building Standards Technical Handbooks and the guidance promoted by PAMIS (Promoting a More Inclusive Society), which supports the delivery of high-quality Changing Places Toilets for people with profound and multiple learning disabilities. Our approach also aligns with the design principles and operational requirements set out by the Changing Places Consortium, ensuring that facilities provide appropriate space standards, equipment provision and layout to deliver safe, dignified and fully accessible environments for users and carers.
In addition to new modular installations, we also undertake the full refurbishment and modernisation of existing public toilet facilities. These refurbishment projects are often bespoke in nature and can involve structural alterations, internal reconfiguration, replacement of fixtures and fittings, upgraded drainage and plumbing systems, improved accessibility, new finishes, lighting, ventilation and enhanced durability to meet the demands of high-footfall public environments. Our experience allows us to work sensitively within existing buildings while improving accessibility, hygiene standards and long-term maintainability.
Case Study – Public Convenience Installations and Refurbishments
Working in partnership with Danfo, we have successfully delivered multiple public convenience projects across the UK for local authorities including Hackney, Redbridge, Sunderland, Wyre and Ribble Valley Councils.
Our scope of works typically begins with site preparation and enabling works, including excavation, foundation installation and service connections. Depending on site conditions, this may involve the construction of reinforced concrete slabs or the installation of piled foundations designed to accommodate modular toilet structures in constrained urban locations, parks or coastal environments.
Once the substructure and services are in place, the modular building is delivered and installed, after which we complete all external works including service connections, drainage integration, paving and surrounding landscaping where required. Each project is delivered with careful consideration to public safety, site access and minimal disruption to the surrounding area.
Alongside new installations, we have undertaken comprehensive refurbishment programmes for existing public convenience facilities, upgrading outdated buildings to meet modern accessibility standards and user expectations. These works have included the installation of new accessible cubicles, Changing Places facilities, durable anti-vandal fixtures, improved lighting and ventilation systems, and modern finishes designed to improve cleanliness, safety and usability.
